Bolzano’s Speck Festival now in its 10th year |
South Tyrolean Speck’s success story is feted in a Speck Festival, taking place this year for the 10th time from 22-26 May in Bolzano.
It combines the mild flavour of Italian Parma ham (though less salty) with the strong flavour (though more delicate) of Alpine smoked ham: South Tyrolean Speck PGI (Protected Geographical Indication), a delicious and unique quality product, often described as South Tyrol’s gastronomic ambassador.
“Speck” – boned, cured and lightly smoked hindquarters of pork – is the snack of choice among South Tyroleans, delicious with crunchy “Schüttelbrot” bread and a glass of locally grown Vernatsch red wine.
Speck is celebrated each year in a festival of its own, accompanied by colourful traditional music and dancing, with plenty of other local food products to taste and purchase. This year’s event combines tradition with modernity both in the programme and the culinary delights on offer. South Tyrolean Speck PGI will be showcased in a “Speck Party” taking place in the Campofranco palace featuring fine gourmet speck-based delicacies, on offer both there and in Bolzano’s main square, the Piazza Walther/Waltherplatz.
Bons viveurs can combine the festival with wine events taking place during the “Wine Route Weeks” from 15th May to 14th June 2008 around Bolzano and in various wine villages to the south of the town.
