From Monte Sëura to Malga Zallinger
From Monte Sëura to Malga Zallinger

by Vitalpina Hotel Dosses - 17.11.2009
Category: Alpine excursions

Beautiful hike along the base of the Sassolungo to the Alpe di Siusi, Europe's largest plateau (60 km²). The steep rocky walls, in sharp contrast with the extensive meadows in bloom, are a real pleasure for nature lovers.
Starting point: Dolomiti Hotel Dosses/Santa Cristina/Val Gardena Valley
Itinerary description: Two convenient lift systems (Monte Pana and Monte Sëura) will save us a lot of effort and let us soon reach Mont de Sëura. Our itinerary takes us first to Piz Uridl, a prominent rise from where it seems as if you can really touch the Sassolungo. The itinerary continues along the base of the mountains up to Malga Zallinger, one of the oldest high-altitude hotels in the Dolomites, passing next to a small chapel where, in mid August, a mass is always celebrated for all the inhabitants of the Alpe. Then, the itinerary continues down to the Tirler Hotel, crossing a Swiss pine woods. The trail that descends to Santa Cristina via Monte Pana, passing first near the springs of excellent Confin water, is a real delight.

Length: 14 km
Walking time: approx. 6 hours
Height difference: ascent 150 m; descent 400 m
Starting altitude/highest point: 1428/2132m

Best period: June - September

Curiosities and interesting facts: We will have the massive walls of the Sassolungo in front of us during this hike. The Sassolungo (3181 m) is the mountain symbol of Val Gardena; its peak was first conquered in 1869 and today is the destination of many climbers who reach the top - which offers a truly fantastic panorama - accompanied by an expert Alpine guide.
