5 tips for a sustainable winter holiday

Sustainability is now a big issue for many people, especially when it comes to holidays. We offer 5 tips so that you too can enjoy the snow in South Tyrol this winter and still have a clear conscience as regards the environment and nature.

This is how you can leave green footprints in the snow!

1. The right area

If you are looking for fun in the snow that’s also in harmony with nature, go on holiday to an area with as much natural snow as possible, as the guaranteed snow means such areas need fewer snow cannons. In South Tyrol these are in particular the Val Gardena, the Tauferer Ahrntal Valley, the Ortler Skiarena, the Dolomites Three Peaks and the Ratschings-Jaufen ski area.

2. Sustainable diversity

Sustainable winter sports mean winter sports that do not alter or negatively affect the natural world. It doesn’t always have to be skiing! Cross-country skiing and ski touring are alternatives, allowing you to explore the snow-covered mountains and valleys from a new and above all sustainable angle! An entertaining change is also offered by exploring the mountains on an enjoyable hike through the snow, or even on snowshoes. Tobogganing is also a wonderful activity that is also very environmentally friendly. By the way, when doing any of these activities, don't forget to wear a helmet!

3. Getting there sustainably

When it comes to winter holidays, most people choose to travel by car. It is after all comfortable and, especially for skiing holidays, visitors will have a lot of luggage with them. But did you know that the new “Südtirol Transfershuttle service can take you from the train station or the coach stop to your Vitalpina hotel? Many ski resorts in South Tyrol are now very easily accessible by bus and train, while six of our Vitalpina hotels are in fact located directly on the slopes. So you can put on your skis right outside the hotel – and off you go!

4. Sustainable accommodation

If you’re looking for sustainable accommodation in South Tyrol, look no further. The Vitalpina Hotels of South Tyrol are certified with the EU Ecolabel: they use seasonal and regional produce in their Vital cuisine, avoid disposable products in the breakfast buffet, use energy and water as efficiently as possible, use refillable containers for cosmetics... we could go on. But, most importantly, the Vitalpina Hotels are determined to create a sense of awareness for living sustainability among their guests and staff. Every Vitalpina hotel has its own approach – come and see for yourself!

5. Gear that meets eco-standards

A sustainable skiing holidays does not just mean choosing the right ski area, using environmentally friendly transport and booking sustainable accommodation, however: environmental awareness should also be a particular consideration when choosing equipment. For example, you don't need a new ski outfit every season. If you don't want to do without the latest trends, on the other hand, we would recommend the South Tyrolean mountain sports specialist Salewa. This Bozen-based company was in 2018 once again granted Leader Status by the Fair Wear Foundation. This status is awarded to manufacturers who meet particularly high requirements, ensure transparency in their manufacturing processes and guarantee intensive exchanges with their worldwide production facilities. As far as gear is concerned, you don't necessarily have to buy cross-country or touring skis or a toboggan, as these can all be easily rented at a local ski rental shop. Other major advantages: there is sure to be a large selection of the latest models in stock, while the environment will be delighted...!
