Car(e)free holidays!

Do you know the feeling of taking an environmentally-friendly trip by train or coach to South Tyrol, then having to ask yourself: “How can I get the last few kilometres to the hotel?”. From 1 October the problem is no more: the “Südtirol-Transfer” shuttle service will take you directly to your accommodation from the bus or train station. To find out details on this gentle way of travelling to South Tyrol, read on.

Sustainable travel to South Tyrol

We should try to keep our ecological footprint as small as possible, not just in our daily lives but also when we are travelling. More and more travellers are today switching from planes and cars to buses and trains: no wonder, when we consider that people’s environmental awareness is higher than ever before. A long-distance journey, say from Munich to Thailand, will produce almost three times as many CO2 emissions as a whole year of driving a car; nor is offsetting air miles a solution. So-called “soft tourism” is increasingly exploring nearby travel destinations and, because long-distance travel it not always the answer, local bus and train travel is back in fashion.

This however requires a functioning door-to-door infrastructure from country to country. South Tyrol is already easily accessible by train and bus: there are five daily connections from Munich alone, while Freccia trains run directly from the main Italian cities to the local capital, Bozen. And soon the “last mile”, from the train station or bus stop to the hotel, will no longer be a problem.

Ready to go: Südtirol-Transfer

Around 10,000 accommodation providers in South Tyrol are soon to be connected to the train stations of Bozen, Brixen, Meran, Bruneck, Mals, Innichen; to the coach stops in Bozen, Meran, Klausen, and to Bozen airport. Travellers can choose between a taxi share or an individual transfer. The new service can be conveniently booked online as of 1 October, the date when the first shuttle buses will start running.

Now you may be wondering how do I then get around South Tyrol during my holiday? No problem: with one of the popular visitor tickets you can use regular buses, city buses, ski buses, regional trains and local cable cars (Meransen, Jenesien, Ritten, Mendel and the Rittner tramway) to reach your desired destinations. The world-famous Pragser Wildsee Lake, the beautiful high plateaus at the heart of South Tyrol, the Reschensee Lake at the end of the Vinschgau Valley – all these are accessible by train, bus or cable car. So what about leaving your car at home when you next come on holiday to South Tyrol? We would be delighted – and so would the environment!
