Six locations, six themes and one headliner: the mountain.
Reinhold Messner has packed his mountain experience and mountain wisdom into a museum project that has, since its inception, inspired thousands of visitors to engage in a cultural encounter, with the mountain as the theme. On 17 September, Reinhold Messner will turn 70 years old. A special exhibition weaves various autobiographical highlights throughout the entire six-part museum. Five of the sites are quite unusual, and are exciting excursion destinations for people for whom nature is sacred.

  • MMM Firmian in Bolzano/Bozen
Set in and around Sigmundskron Castle, the MMM museum in Bolzano/Bozen focuses on the conflict between man and mountain. The 2014 special exhibition shows all the 8000ers, Antarctica and the Gobi Desert, through the works of Tyrolean artist Richard Rangger.
  • MMM Ortles in Solda/Sulden
The Ortles museum takes visitors to the “End of the World.” The museum in Solda/Sulden, situated at 1900 meters, is located underground and devoted to the theme of ice. The special 2014 exhibition at the ice-themed museum focuses on Messner's expedition to Greenland.
  • MMM Ripa in Brunico/Bruneck
This museum, located at Bruneck Castle, presents the mountain peoples of Asia, Africa, South America and Europe and examines their culture, religion and tourism.
The 2014 special exhibition at the museum dedicated to the mountain peoples of the world museum addresses Reinhold Messner’s childhood
  • MMM Juval in Castelbello/Kastelbell
Juval Castle houses various art collections that shed light on the mythos of the mountain, including a Tibetan collection, a gallery with images of the sacred mountains of the world and a collection of masks from five continents. Juval Castle is Reinhold Messner’s private residence. The castle is open for guided tours during spring and autumn.
  • MMM Corones at Kronplatz Project
Reinhold Messner calls the sixth and final member of his museum chain a fifteenth 8000er. The Corones museum will stand atop the summit plateau of Kronplatz, between the Dolomites and the Central Alps. It is dedicated to the theme of rock, and thus to large mountain faces. Reinhold Messner has put an architect of no less stature than the world-famous Zaha Haid at the helm of the project. For information about how the museum is progressing, click here.
Reinhold Messner has been one of the world’s most successful mountaineers for the last 30 years, has made 100 first ascents in about 3,500 climbs, conquered all fourteen 8000ers, walked across the Antarctic and Greenland lengthwise and traversed Tibet, the Gobi Desert and the Taklamakan Desert. His biography, About Life, offers insights into the charismatic landscape of the soul of this frontier crosser, extreme alpinist, politician and pioneer.
