Leg 1 of the hike leads from the village of Tirolo (Dorf Tirol) near Merano (Meran) to the Hochganhaus mountain refuge above Parcines (Partschins).
- Start- and target point: Tirolo
- Duration: 2:30 h
- Distance: 5,2 km
- Altitude: 490 m
- Max. height: 1.838 m
Approach is from Merano (Meran), going by car or bus to the village of Tirolo (Dorf Tyrol) and then to the Hochmuth cable car. The first leg of the Alta Via di Merano (Meraner Höhenweg) high trail starts off rather easily: it is doable over the course of an afternoon. In midsummer, make sure to take a look at the weather report to be certain that there are no afternoon storms. You can also walk up from Tiroler Kreuz (parking available) along Trail No. 23 + 24, via Talbauer Tavern. From Hochmut at 1,361 metres (before setting off, be sure to appreciate one of South Tyrol’s most beautiful panoramas) take Trail No. 24, following the Hans-Frieden-Weg Trail, to Leiteralm alpine pasture at 1,522 m. Take a short rest there and then continue on to Hochganghaus at 1,839 m. In advance of the long hikes ahead of you, relax in the library of the mountain refuge, which has good literature, and get to bed early.
