To the Pfoialm and Uwaldalm alpine pastures at the valley head of Valle di Caseis (Gsieser Tal)

14.06.2016 - by Vitalpina Hotels Südtirol
Category: Pleasure walk

High above Santa Maddalena (St. Magdalena) in Val di Casies (Gsieser Tal) Valley
  •  Start- and target point: Valle di Casies
  •  Duration: 3:30 h
  •  Distance: 8,2 km
  •  Altitude: 620 m
  •  Max. height: 2.073 m
From the Talschlusshütte mountain hut just beyond Sankt Magdalena in Valle di Casies (Gsies) at 1,465 m; parking area, turn right across the stream. Walk along the farm access road for a while, towards Burgerhof Farm, until you reach a trail (No. 12/13) branching off to the right. Follow this trail, which is moderately steep, through the forest in Pfoital Valley up to a crossroad. Ignore the trail on the left, which branches off to the Uwaldalm pastures, and stay on Trail No. 13, continuing through Pfoital Valley, up to some meadows. When you are below the Keilerhütte mountain hut (approx. 2,050 m), turn left and follow the path through the pastures, which crosses grassy slopes and has only a slight uphill grade, out to the Uwaldalm alpine pastures (2,042 m; serves food); about 2 hours. Descent: either stay on the forest road, which is broad and easy but rather long, the whole way or take the old footpath, which is shorter but steeper (marked No. 12), which is the same route as the lower part of the ascent; 1 to 1.5 hours from Uwaldalm.

Descent: From Brogleshütte, head back up to the northern Broglessattel Saddle along Trail No. 3, under the striped Secedawand face, and through the beautiful Val d'Anna (Annatal) Valley (staying with signage for No. 3) mostly near a creek, moderately steep, down through woods and along a grassy forest aisle, down to the intersection with the Troi Paian Trail (ancient pagan path), and continuing on the partially paved Trail No. 3 through the forest to the Furn Farms. From there, you’re quickly back on a narrow asphalt road (continue following signs for No. 3) through meadows, down to the Gran Pünt (large bridge) and between farms and houses to Ortisei; just under 2 hours from Brogleshütte.om the Val Pusteria turn off at Sesto towards the Val Campo di Dentro. Early starters (before 9am) can drive all the way to the "Antoniusstein" car park. Continue on foot towards the Rifugio Tre Scarperi. Immediately before the refuge take the route to the Rocca dei Baranci. This steep footpath takes you through larches to a scree-covered area becoming steeper as you go up. The ascent is strenuous. At the end of this section you can glimpse the cross on the summit glimmering in the sunshine. The last 300 metres are partly on scree and partly on rocky terrain and an easy climb will take you to the summit. Return via the same route.
