Oswald von Wolkenstein Riding Tournament

03.06.2012 - by Vitalpina Hotel Icaro ***
Category: Summer
To the minnesinger Oswald von Wolkenstein is dedicated the biggest horseback riding festival in South Tyrol: the Oswald von Wolkenstein Riding Tournament. The poet and composer (1376 – 1445) was no physical-fitness buff, nor was he a member of the medieval horsey set. The horseback-riding tournament held in his honor is thus a reflection both of medieval traditions and the love of equestrian sports (centering on the Haflinger breed) which has survived in South Tyrol to this day. The contests are always held in places with some connection to Oswald's life.
From game to game
Galloping into the Middle Ages is every spring the returning motto in the Sciliar region. After the start at the Forte Castle in Ponte Gardena the tournament goes on with four stages: at the Monte Calvario takes place the traditional ring jousting. The second game, the labyrinth, is on program at the Matzlbödele in Siusi. At the lake Laghetto di Fiè with its gallop is the third of four stages. To conclude the tournament is the game at Presule Castle, the ride trough posts.

36 teams
A total of 36 teams face the challenging competition games of the Oswald von Wolkenstein Riding Tournament. Every team consists of four riders who face the competition with their banners and traditional costumes. The team with the best overall time is the winning team: apart from speed, flexibility and riding skill are necessary to come first in the Oswald von Wolkenstein Riding Tournament.
