Do you think it’s too much trouble not to come by car to South Tyrol? It doesn’t have to be like that. We will tell you the sustainable way to get to South Tyrol as well as how to get around once you’ve arrived at your holiday destination – without the need for four wheels.
Getting to South Tyrol: let it roll!
You can’t get to South Tyrol entirely without using a vehicle, but it doesn’t have to be your own car. There are nowadays numerous fast and comfortable alternatives that won’t cost the earth. They also protect the climate and quickly get you to your destination.
The trains run by DBB (German railways) and ÖBB (Austrian railways) get you from Germany and Austria via direct connections from Munich and Vienna. Visitors from Switzerland can take the train via Innsbruck and over the Brenner Pass or arrive here via Zernez. The night trains from various German cities are especially practical as they literally get you to your destination “in your sleep”.
If coming by road instead of by rail, taking a Flixbus is recommended. There are also seasonal shuttle and express buses, such as the Meraner Land Express from Munich or the Südtirol Express from Switzerland.
Once you have completed stage one of your sustainable journey to South Tyrol, it’s the turn of the South Tyrol Transfer. This is comprehensive connecting shuttle service that departs from train stations and long-distance bus stops. You can alternatively use public transport. In some cases, rail travellers can purchase a cheap “Anschlussticket Südtirol” that permits onward connections.
If you don’t want to lug heavy suitcases around but would rather travel light, use one of the local luggage forwarding and transportation services such as Insam Express which will bring your suitcases, bags and even your bike from various European countries to your accommodation – and of course back again.
