Cattle Drive in the Jaufental Valley – A Living Tradition and True South Tyrolean Spirit
As summer slowly fades and autumn colors begin to paint the landscape, the Jaufental Valley prepares for one of its most cherished events: the traditional cattle drive, or "Almabtrieb". This centuries-old South Tyrolean custom continues to fascinate both locals and visitors alike.
In September, after months spent grazing on the high alpine meadows, the cows return to the valley – adorned with floral crowns, colorful ribbons, and ringing bells. These decorations are far more than festive accessories; they are a meaningful sign that the summer passed safely, and a way of giving thanks for a season without accidents.
The return of the cattle marks the beginning of a lively celebration. Guests and locals gather to enjoy traditional South Tyrolean dishes, live music, and a warm, festive atmosphere. Many of our guests at Naturhotel Rainer love to join in, experiencing this cultural highlight right in the heart of the valley.
As a family-run hotel, it's a privilege to uphold these traditions and share them with others. And it’s always a special moment when our own animals come back safely from our Ontrattalm pasture.
The Almabtrieb is much more than a scenic event – it’s a powerful symbol of our deep connection to nature, agriculture, and the rhythms of life in the mountains.
Visitors who stay with us during this time enjoy autumn at its most authentic – rich in color, full of flavor, and rooted in a cultural heritage that truly defines South Tyrol.
