Dr Buchinger’s fasting method
Our hostess Annelies is a trained fasting assistant and an Ayurveda therapist dealing with the topic of fasting for health. At the Vitalpina Alphotel Stocker in the Ahrntal Valley, she holds two Buchinger fasting weeks each month during which she accompanies those fasting and is always available with advice and practical assistance. The purpose of this one-week fast is to do both body and soul good and to get out of the rut of the everyday.
The Buchinger fasting method involves a juice fast that does entirely without solid food on fasting days. Dr Buchinger began his studies with self-experimentation and, in the 1920s, cured himself of rheumatism by fasting. This experience led him to establish the Buchinger fasting method: he was also the first to add the idea of “health” to the concept of fasting. Fasting was of course common knowledge before Buchinger, and represents an age-old religious and spiritual tradition. The ancient Egyptians recognised the benefits of fasting and it was later adopted by many religions. Whether nowadays in Christian Lent or Muslim Ramadan, fasting can have many origins.
Of course, the concept of fasting for health can be used for different forms. It may often be understood as therapeutic fasting under constant medical supervision. Fasting with Annelies Stocker is however for healthy people and is intended as a prevention, with no need for round-the-clock medical care: Annelies is there throughout the day to offer each guest individual attention. Each fasting week is structured and there are numerous activities for guests each day.
