Autumn magic on South Tyrol’s trails: the “Keschtnweg” (Chestnut Trail)The leaves rustle beneath your feet, while the chestnut trees cast light and shade above you along the way: welcome to the “Keschtnweg”. Leading between Bozen and Brixen, this 90-kilometre trail runs through the landscape like a golden ribbon. It connects the Ritten high plateau with the areas of Barbian, Feldthurns and Villanders as far as Vahrn up near Brixen.
For those wishing to experience the full richness of autumn, this is the perfect trail: wonderful views, plenty to enjoy and beautiful natural surroundings.
The section near Feldthurns is particularly popular and suitable for relaxed autumn hiking:
- Duration: 2-4 hours depending on the section – perfect for a relaxed day’s walk.
- Variation in altitude: easy undulations, perfectly suited to families and for leisurely hikes.
- Route description: narrow paths and forest tracks that lead through chestnut groves, orchards and small villages.
Tasty refreshment: the törggelen experienceWhat would a traditional South Tyrolean autumn hike be without törggelen? After an hour or two walking on the “Keschtnweg” trail, the farmhouse inns along the way will tempt you with a selection of hearty South Tyrolean specialities. Savour homemade dumplings, “Schlutzkrapfen” (stuffed pasta pockets), cured ham, fritters and, of course, freshly roasted chestnuts, all accompanied by a glass of the new wine, whose taste is particularly lively at this time of year.
Törggelen is more than just a meal, however: it is a living example of South Tyrolean culture. Walkers, locals and guests all come together to share stories, laugh and enjoy the autumn atmosphere in the warmth of a Stube, a traditional wood-panelled room.
