For the love of herbs – just as you like them
A herb garden not only introduces flavours into the kitchen, but also fragrances, freshness and a little bit of the natural world into our everyday lives. Best of all, herbs are not demanding – they just need a little soil, light and water. A touch of love is also essential, of course, but that will come naturally anyway!
Whether you have plenty of space or just a narrow windowsill, you can always find the right place for fresh herbs. And, with a few simple tips, your herb garden can become a real source of pleasure!
1. For outdoors: a herb garden in your flowerbed
If you have a garden, you can give your herbs plenty of space - ideal for robust varieties such as rosemary, sage or thyme. These Mediterranean herbs love dry, sunny conditions. Our tip: create a separate bed with good drainage to prevent the herbs from becoming waterlogged. A little spiral or raised bed is also practical – it looks pretty and saves space.
🌱 Life hack: mixed cultivation pays off! Plant basil next to tomatoes, for example – it not only looks nice, it will also provide protection against pests.
2. For your balcony: a green mini-paradise
You can also grow great things in small spaces! Balcony boxes or plant pots are all you need to grow such aromatic friends as parsley, chives or lemon balm. The best place to choose is a sunny spot that is somewhat protected from the wind.
🌿 Life hack: make sure you water your herbs consistently, as neither dehydration nor saturation are desirable. A drainage layer made of gravel will help prevent waterlogging!
3. For indoors: fresh greenery on your windowsill
No garden or balcony? No problem! Herbs such as basil, cress, dill and mint all thrive on windowsills, especially if they are facing south. The only important thing is to ensure there is sufficient light and not to overwater them.
🌞 Life hack: use clay pots as these regulate moisture better than plastic. And, if you want a stylish touch, go for upcycling and plant your herbs in old cups, jars or tins!
Now is the time for planting!
April is the ideal month to start sowing. If you want (and can), start indoors with small pots and only later plant the strong younger plants outside. Or you can easily buy pre-grown herbs from the nursery - that will work too, of course!
And then? Water your herbs regularly and watch them all grow. If necessary, simply pick a few or harvest them from time to time, then use them fresh or leave them to dry. You will see how much pleasure you get from having your own little herb garden!
Feel free to show and tag us a picture of your spring herbs - we look forward to seeing them!
