The black lake 2455m

The Black lake lies northeast of S. Maddalena, just a little below the eastern Gsies ridge on the Villgrata side. It is a quiet, secluded lake about 200 meters in diameter and thus one of the more notable bodies of water in the Gsieser mountains. The crater-like Black lake in the Villgrata region can be reached from the Gsies side via a rather demanding hiking path. If you want to enjoy the view of the lake for longer, we recommend spending a night in one of the two wooden bivouac huts with direct lake view. Bring provisions and a sleeping bag – and the mountain adventure is complete.

Directions: From S. Maddalena fondo Valle, turn right over the brook and follow marker 12, steadily up through the Pfoital to the forest boundary; continue straight uphill toward the Pfoialm (2134 m), through the alpine valley on a good path further up to the junction. Here turn right, following marker 13, steeply up into the Hintere Gsieser Lenke (2539 m, also “Inneres Schartl”) and on the other side, along the path, descend in a few minutes to the lake (2455 m). The tour is suitable for reasonably mountain-experienced hikers, not very difficult and rewarding.
