A touch of Japan in the Dolomites
The Hotel Schgaguler was built in 1986 as a residence with apartments. Located in the idyllic mountain resort of Kastelruth, its timeless architecture and contemporary reinterpretation of Alpine style today ensure that it shines with a completely new light: a revolution of tradition, you might say. The Hotel Schgaguler is intended as a source of inspiration and the harbinger of a new type of mountain hotel: simplicity, reduction, no fanciness, just design limited to the essential. The Schgaguler family even conducted experiments for weeks on end into this, using a “practice room” in the basement.
In the words of Peter and Tobias Schgaguler
: “Most of the hotels in South Tyrol try to sell their guests a bygone idea of mountain life, with Alpine décor, costumes, and so on. We are a boutique hotel seeking a new path with a uniquely timeless, Alpine style that is inspired by the reduced aesthetics and noble simplicity of Scandinavian and Japanese design. We aim for an authentic feel-good ambience that avoids all forms of kitschy folklore”. City, region, design
The Design Hotel Tyrol can look back on a 35-year tradition. Boris Frei
took over the business from his parents Frieda and Helmuth in 2014 and transformed it into a design hotel. “I really enjoyed revamping the establishment according to my ideas and wishes so as to create a place where guests can feel comfortable, spending their holidays in the midst of nature. I myself am very nature-oriented and I want to share this with my guests in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. Design for me has an essential role: architecture is just as much a part of an enjoyable holiday as hospitality and good food”, says the young hotelier.
The Design Hotel Tyrol lives up to its name. Seldom will you arrive somewhere and think that everything fits, right down to the last detail. First impressions count and this is at once clear from the entrance area – with an open bar, fireplace and designer chairs. The interior is perfectly harmonised – neither stuffy nor over the top, but just casual, cool and modern. The rooms are in the same idiom, with bathroom and shower exactly as you would like at home. With just 38 rooms, this small hotel is comfortable, uncomplicated and friendly.
