We all know the feeling: after a leisurely walk, a strenuous hike or an energetic run through the forest, you somehow seem lighter, more upbeat, more relaxed. The Japanese in particular have long known this is no coincidence and have even developed a recognised method of stress management to make use of it: “shinrin yoku” or forest bathing.
Various studies by Japanese scientists have shown that being in the forest acts as a kind of aromatherapy: forest bathing in Japan thus now forms an integral part of a healthy lifestyle.

Meanwhile, the philosophy of forest bathing has found its way into South Tyrol. As part of the activity programme, guests at the Vitalpina Hotels of South Tyrol can sample this demonstrably healthy way of relaxing. Inhaling the essential oils that the trees release into the air strengthens our immune system and reduces the blood pressure. Stress-related conditions too are alleviated by time spent in the forest.

Your hosts will accompany you into the forest, allowing you to consciously get up close to the trees. This is not a matter of hard work: you simply focus entirely on your sense perceptions. Concentrate merely on what is around you. Everything that is unimportant at that moment fades into the background, while thoughts regarding the future or the past can just continue on their way: the only important thing at present is you yourself in the here and now.
