Hay from South Tyrolean Meadows

Hay baths – a South Tyrolean Tradition

What is the secret of hay and the components it is made up of? One thing is for sure: the higher the meadow from which it comes, the more varied the flora and thus the more effective in healing is the hay...

Documents from the time suggest that „Heubaldln“ (hay baths) originated as far back as 1871. On the Schlern mountain (2450m) in the Dolomite range, hay cutters would sleep on chopped up hay after a hard day’s toil and wake up the following morning recovered and refreshed and full of energy to start again. Soon the practice began to be copied by other folk of the region, initially as a way of refreshing themselves, and then later as a way of easing rheumatic pains. This was the beginning of the use of the South Tyrolean hay bath as for healing purposes.

Herbs from South Tyrol

VitalpinaHerb Power

Healing plants and herbs can have a positive effect on health and wellness including, depending on which active substances it contains, healing and preventative effects. They can be used for infusions, baths, massage oils, bath salts and herbal creams.

We have selected four versatile companions from South Tyrol’s abundance of mountain herbs:

  • Nettle
  • Wild thyme (meadow thyme)
  • Lady’s mantle
  • Yarrow

Mountain Pine

The original - Pinus Sarentensis

Mountain pine essential oil is good for skin care, stimulates blood circulation and has a deodorising effect. Over 250g of pine needles are used to make one litre of the valuable Sarner Latsche - original - pinus sarentensis mountain pine oil.

Thanks to the quality of the soil and the intense rays from the sun, Sarntal mountain pine is particularly good for making oil. Additionally, the craft of burning, which has been passed down through generations, is essential to successful production of the oil.

The perfume of Sarner pine is characterised by a pleasant fresh, balsamic, woody-resinous forest scent with a Southern flair.

Vitalpina Hotels Südtirol use mountain pine in several of their wellness treatments.

TREHS - the energy from the Alps

Not only for eating and drinking...

Natural grape-seed extract in various dosages and of various consistencies is used in a number of beauty and revitalisation treatments.

Wellness baths, massages with grape-seed extract, pressed grape skin packs, cosmetic treatments and special wine-menus are all on offer as a way of getting the body back on form.

Particularly well-loved among these treatments is the „Weinbadl", or wine-bath. The treatment begins with a body scrub using pressed grape skins, followed by a short relaxing period, wrapped in a linen towel. Then, a dip into a hot tub, with a glass of good red wine, followed finally by a massage with grape-seed oil.
